Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
Tests
A laboratory test used to help diagnose the disorder (in addition to thyroid function tests: TSH, T4, T3) is Anti-thyroid peroxidase antibody (anti-TPO, see Thyroid antibodies). This test detects the presence of autoantibodies against a protein found in thyroid cells. These antibodies are not normally present, so a high value usually indicates autoimmune damage to the thyroid due to disorders such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease.
