SHBG

Also known as: Testosterone-estrogen Binding Globulin (TeBG)
Formal name: Sex Hormone Binding Globulin
Related tests: Testosterone, Free Testosterone, Bioavailable Testosterone
Common Questions
  1. Are there other uses for the SHBG test?
2. Can I change my level of SHBG?

1. Are there other uses for the SHBG test? Not yet, but researchers are evaluating conditions in which there are changes in testosterone and SHBG levels to see if there may be additional clinical uses for the test.

2. Can I change my level of SHBG? Not directly and there is no reason to do so. The important thing is evaluating a patient’s hormone balance. In some cases, testosterone and/or estrogen replacement therapy may be used to correct a deficiency. Researchers are now exploring the benefits and risks of testosterone replacement in elderly men (men undergoing “andropause”) and postmenopausal (or surgical menopause) women. It will be some time before it is established whether (and when) this treatment is safe, effective, and clinically useful.
